Troop Background

Our Charter

Troop 826 is chartered by VFW Post 9473 in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. We thank them for their many benefits to us and to the Boy Scouts as a whole.

About Us

Troop 826 was chartered by the VFW with only 12 scouts on August 26, 1996. Since then, our numbers have grown exponentially. Currently, we have about 85 active boy scouts and 18 registered adult advisors.

It is common belief that our growth and retention of scouts is due to the quality program we provide focussing on outdoor living and high adventure. We meet weekly and camp monthly all year. One of the monthly campouts is a weeklong stay at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation for summer camp. Aside from these regular activities, other opportunities are provided to our scouts. Every year, Troop 826 sends a contingent to at least one of three high adventure bases owned by the Boy Scouts of America. These include Philmont Scout Ranch, where scouts will backpack on a trek through the mountains of New Mexico, Florida Sea Base, where scouts will snorkel and fish as they sail through the Florida Keys toward Key West, and finally, Northern Tier Canoe Base, where scouts will traverse the many lakes between Minnesota and Canada by canoe. We also provide a whitewater rafting trip annually.

Besides our outings, Troop 826 is also dedicated to service. We participate in many one-time service projects throughout the year, but we also participate in three major on-going service projects. First, we participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program. We pick up litter and debris from a 2-mile section of State Route 40. Second, we began a cemetery restoration project which consists of fixing broken headstones and maintaining an old historic cemetery in Reynoldsburg. Third, we volunteer at the Pataskala Oaks Nursing Home once every month.

Troop 826 meets at VFW Post 9473 on Waggoner Rd. We meet at 7:00-8:30 on Wednesday nights in the VFW's banquet hall. Feel free to drop by and see what we're all about!

Leadership

Troop 826 follows the BSA doctrine of youth leadership. This means that the scouts lead themselves under the advisory of adults.

The youth choose their activities, plan their campouts, budget, plan, and cook their meals; see what they want to see and go where they want to go. The youth are headed by the Senior Patrol Leader.

The role of the adult advisors is to be mentors, to lead by example, and only if necessary, intervene. It is our philosophy that if the youth do not have enough freedom to make minor mistakes, they are not truly leading. This group is headed by the Scoutmaster.

The framework needed for all this to take place is the Troop Committee. This is a group of adults who indirectly benefit the scouts. They handle such issues as finances, equipment, and others. The leader of this group is the Committee Chairman.
